In this edition: Important lessons and mottos for filmmakers on set, a first look at Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming spy thriller Argylle, and 60 cards to unlock your unconscious.

Hi Muses, I don’t know about you, but this week was a MARATHON! Thankfully, I spent it doing one of my favorite things: directing. For the aspiring directors and storytellers out there, here are some important lessons and mottos that came up for me while filming…  xo bdh

1. “Measure twice and cut once”

This proverb, though originally for carpenters and seamstresses, is also handy for directors. Measuring twice means thinking through all the things that could go wrong (or right!) before executing and having a plan to deal with all those situations. I love this saying because it reminds me that even when I think I have an answer, it’s essential to pause, ask more questions, vet more fully, and go a layer deeper.

2. “Whatever you think I meant is what I meant”

This is one of my favorite responses to a collaborator after giving them direction — it’s another way of saying, “Make of this what you will because there’s no ‘right way’ to do it.” Directing and acting are such interpretive art forms and that interpretation is where all the nuance, specificity, and genius come through. As much as I can, I like using this phrase to give those opportunities for interpretation.

3. “If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no”

The gut response of a “hell yes” is not to be ignored; it means there’s something about the project or opportunity that is resonating with you on a visceral level that is important to follow. Too often we agree to commitments that we aren’t totally enthusiastic about, and the cost of that is our time, energy, resources, and most importantly, the ability to fully invest in the projects and people we do love. The next time you’re considering a project, before getting into analyzing pros and cons, do a quick gut check: is it a hell yes, or a no?

Dream Decoder: 60 Cards to Unlock Your Unconscious

I strongly believe there is wisdom to be found in dreams — they’re short and impactful windows into the mind (and sometimes funny manifestations of our everyday life). Lately, after I wake up from a really vivid dream, I refer to my Dream Decoder cards, a beautifully illustrated deck with 60 of the most common dreams and interpretations for each. I love how these cards present opportunities for self-reflection. I’m able to start my day more aware of the challenges, opportunities, and choices around me that I maybe wasn’t attuned to before.

In Jurassic World News… Meet DeWanda Wise’s Kayla Watts

If you’ve seen my Instagram lately, I’ve been gushing over my new favorite action hero, DeWanda Wise. DeWanda joins Jurassic World: Dominion as the fearless, resourceful, and adventure-loving pilot named Kayla Watts. You can read more about this soon-to-be iconic character in DeWanda’s exclusive interview with Empire magazine.

I say, dress to please yourself. Listen to your inner muse and take a chance. Wear something that says ‘Here I am!’ today.
